Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 27, 2026
This policy explains how the PillTap app ("PillTap") handles your information. PillTap is made by Tate Rivers Silcox ("we", "us").
The short version
- We do not collect any of your data. Your medications, doses, notes and settings are stored on your iPhone and, only if you turn on iCloud sync, in your own iCloud account, encrypted so that neither Apple nor we can read them.
- If you choose to share someone's medications with a caregiver, PillTap sends them to that caregiver's iPhone through Apple's iCloud. It never goes through us.
- PillTap has no account, no servers, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking. It never sends your information to us or anyone else.
- We cannot see, access, sell or share your data, because we never have it.
What PillTap stores on your iPhone
To work, PillTap saves the following on your iPhone:
- medications you add (names, strengths, schedules, dose limits, supply, expiration dates, colors, notes);
- doses you log, skip or miss, including times, amounts, injection or patch sites, how you felt, side effects and notes;
- the codes (serial numbers) of NFC stickers you pair with your medications;
- the people you track medications for, if you add any (a name and a color);
- your settings, such as alarm text and sounds, your home time zone, and whether Face ID is required;
- the date you first opened PillTap, kept in your iPhone's Keychain so the PillTap Pro launch price lasts 7 days. It never leaves your iPhone.
This information is health information about you (or about the person whose medications you track). It stays in PillTap's storage on your iPhone, protected by your iPhone's passcode and encryption, and, if you turn it on, by Face ID. PillTap uses this data only to provide the app's features to you.
iPhone features PillTap uses
- Camera: to read a medication label when you choose to scan one. The photo is read on your iPhone and is not saved or sent anywhere.
- NFC: to read a sticker's serial number and, on a blank sticker, to write a web link containing that serial number. The link contains no medication information, but anyone who scans the sticker can see it.
- Face ID / passcode: handled entirely by iOS. PillTap only learns whether unlocking succeeded, never your face data or passcode.
- Alarms and notifications: scheduled on your iPhone. By default they show your alarm text instead of the medication name.
- Widgets: show upcoming doses on your Home Screen or Lock Screen. They show medication names only if you turn that on in Settings.
- Siri and Shortcuts: if you use them, Shortcuts only receives a sticker code, never medication names, times or amounts. Requests you make through Siri are handled by Apple under Apple's privacy policy.
When information leaves your iPhone
Only when you choose, and never to us:
- iCloud sync: off unless you turn it on (in Settings › iCloud & Backup, or while setting up PillTap). If you do, your medications, doses, notes and the people you added are copied to the private database of your own iCloud account through Apple's CloudKit, so other iPhones signed in to the same iCloud account stay up to date. Their contents are encrypted on your iPhone with keys kept in your iCloud Keychain, so Apple and we cannot read them. Apple can see that encrypted records exist, how large they are and when they change. To update your other iPhones right away, Apple's push notification service sends them a silent signal that contains no medication information. We have no access to your iCloud account. When you turn sync off, you choose whether to keep or delete the copy in iCloud.
- Sharing with a caregiver: off unless you turn it on for a person (in Settings › People & Sharing, which needs iCloud sync and PillTap Pro). You choose who to invite, using Apple's sharing screen. A caregiver who accepts can see that person's medications, schedules and doses (taken, skipped or missed) on their own iPhone, and PillTap there can alert them when a dose isn't logged on time. Notes, feelings and side effects are shared only if you turn on "Include notes". The shared copy stays encrypted in iCloud so that only you and the people you invited can read it. Apple and we cannot. Caregivers can only look; they can't change anything. You can stop sharing or remove a caregiver at any time, and their iPhone then stops receiving updates. Anything a caregiver already saw, or copied elsewhere, is outside our control. If someone shares with you, PillTap shows their information on your iPhone the same way and does not send it anywhere else.
- iPhone backups: PillTap's data is excluded from iCloud and computer backups unless you turn on "Include in iPhone backup" in Settings › iCloud & Backup. If you do, your backup is stored by Apple (or on your computer) under Apple's privacy policy.
- Exports and doctor reports: if you export your history or make a doctor report, the file goes wherever you send it (for example email, Messages or AirDrop). The name you type on a doctor report is not saved in PillTap.
- Sticker links: if a PillTap sticker is scanned by a phone that doesn't have PillTap, the phone may open the link in a web browser. That website is hosted by GitHub, which, like any website host, may receive standard technical information such as the IP address and the sticker code. We do not use analytics on that website. See GitHub's privacy statement.
- Buying stickers: "Get NFC stickers" in PillTap opens our stickers page in your web browser. Its links to Amazon are affiliate links: as an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. Amazon only tells us which products sold through our links, never who bought them, and knows nothing about your medications from PillTap. Amazon handles your visit under its own privacy notice.
- Purchases: Apple processes PillTap Pro purchases. We receive no payment details or personal information, only Apple's standard sales reports, which do not say who bought.
We do not share, sell or rent any information with anyone, and we do not use your information for advertising or marketing.
Keeping or deleting your data
Your data stays on your iPhone (and in your iCloud account, if you turned on iCloud sync) until you delete it. You can delete individual doses in History, delete medications in the Medications tab, or delete everything by deleting the PillTap app. Deleting the app permanently removes its data from your iPhone; it cannot be recovered unless it is in an iPhone backup you made or in iCloud sync. To delete the copy in iCloud, turn off iCloud sync in PillTap's Settings and choose Delete from iCloud (if you already deleted the app, install it again, turn sync on, then off). To stop sharing with a caregiver, go to Settings › People & Sharing. Because we never receive your data, we have none to delete or hand over.
You can turn off camera, notification, alarm, Face ID and backup access at any time in PillTap's Settings or in the iPhone Settings app.
Your privacy rights
Depending on where you live (for example California, Washington, Nevada, Connecticut, Colorado, or the European Union and United Kingdom), you may have the right to know, access, correct or delete personal or health data a company collects about you, to withdraw consent, and to opt out of its sale or sharing. Because PillTap keeps your data only on your devices and, if you choose, in your own iCloud account, and we collect none of it, you can exercise these rights directly in the app as described above. You can still contact us with any request or question, and we will respond.
We do not sell personal data, and we do not use health data for anything other than providing PillTap's features on your own iPhone.
Children
PillTap is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone. A parent or guardian may use PillTap to track a child's medications on their own iPhone.
Security
PillTap relies on your iPhone's built-in security: its passcode, data protection encryption and, if you turn it on, Face ID. With iCloud sync on, the copy in iCloud is encrypted with keys kept in your iCloud Keychain. Keep your iPhone protected with a passcode. No system is perfectly secure; if someone unlocks your iPhone, they may be able to see what is in PillTap.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we will update the date at the top and show the new version in the app. If a change affects how your data is handled, we will ask you to agree again before you keep using PillTap.
